News, Reports, Results

Membership on the Rise

BCC Membership 300+

Brunswick CC membership has now crept well over the 300 mark! We've grown in all areas from Juniors up to Masters. As a result, there are a lot of new faces around. Make sure you say hi and if you are a new member, don't be afraid to get in and get involved with the club.

Even if you only race on the road with us, come along on a Tuesday night and introduce yourself to the gang. We'd love to meet you and put a face to all the names on our list!

Vicinos off to the UK

Farewell Josh, Ray and Sheryl

Brunswick's best ever secretary (other than Alf) will be retiring this month, as her family is headed over to the UK. Ray Vicino has a job with BT so the family is moving there for three years.

It's hard to imagine the club operating without the hard work and dedication of Sheryl Vicino, and we will sorely miss Josh "Baby" Vicino's racing on the road, track and rollers.

Brunswick CC would like to thank the Vicino family for their invaluable efforts with the club and wish them all the best for the future.

New Club Uniform

Progress on the new club strip

The new club uniform designs have been on show Tuesday nights, and we've received a large amount of excellent feedback from members on the three proposed designs. After a few back and forths, we have narrowed the choice down to a final selection which should be ready by the end of August.

Members with a current uniform will be able to continue wearing it at open events, so there's no need to worry about having to update.

AGM and Committee Positions

Nominate now for the AGM

Your club needs you! With over 300 members and a very full development and racing program, the Brunswick Cycling Club needs your help. Ever felt the need to get involved while your child or partner is racing, training and you're just there? Maybe you have noticed something we could be doing better? Brunswick Cycling Club has the deal for you. Here is your chance to nominate to become part of the administration of the club.

Getting involved brings you much closer to the action.

The club AGM is just over a month away - that means all committee positions are now open for nominations. If you'd like to nominate yourself, or someone else President, Secretary, general committee or any other key position, please contact the club secretary by email on <secretary@brunswickcyclingclub.com>.

Vic Junior Road Titles

Liam Hood

Well the Junior State Time Trial and Road Race Championships have been run and won. Unfortunately it didn't go to plan for me, while I felt in good form all weekend the results didn't appear on the board, here's how it went.

On Saturday we left home early so I could have a good warm up for the time trial, I was able to ride the course in the morning and check out the road and weather conditions to decide how I should race it. Finally it was getting close to my start time with one minute gaps between riders, I waited on the start ramp and counted down the seconds, 5,4,3,2,1 and I was away, the course was out and back with only a slight gradient uphill heading to the turn around and there was also a slight headwind going out.

I was caught and passed by the rider who started behind me near the end, it was the eventual winner Colac rider Zac Shaw, as I crossed the line I thought I had done as well as I could, the result however had me just outside the top 10, the other Brunswick riders racing were Bryce Holloway, James Pane and Tyson Breen and they all finished down the order, Christian Molina did not finish due to a broken chain.

I was disappointed with the result as it was my worst for the year; I really needed to focus now on the road race on Sunday as I was confident the course would suit me and of getting a good result.

I had a good night sleep and even missed the Tour de France time trial on TV the night before so I was as well prepared and ready to race as I could be on Sunday. I rode from our accommodation with Bryce as a warm up to the start area as I tried to get myself in the zone, I felt really good once we got on the start line waiting for the race to get underway.

My tactics are to usually race near the front of the bunch to try and keep out of trouble and so I can be ready for any breakaways that may need to be marked.

At about 10km into the race with everyone still together something happened right at the front to cause the riders behind them to break or swerve quickly, this then caused the riders immediately behind them to touch wheels and fall, as I was about three rows from the front I had nowhere to go and went straight over the first ones to fall, one of the riders who managed to stay upright later told me my bikes front wheel hit his shoulder as it flipped.

About ten riders fell altogether and three of them were Brunswick members, Tyson, James and I.

My immediate thoughts were must get back on the bike and finish, must get on the bike and finish, I saw my red Specialized sitting in the tangle of bikes on the ground so grabbed it and spun the wheels to make sure they can still turn which they did, however as I did so there was a sharp pain in my right arm so I knew all was not well.

By this time the rest of the bunch was a long way down the road, as I started riding my arm was in pain but my only thoughts were I wanted to catch the bunch ahead. This took my about another 10km of chasing, I passed quite a few riders that had dropped off by now and I managed to get on just at the start of the Taminic Gap hill climb, once I got over the top I had used quite a lot of energy so I wanted to conserve as much as possible for a sprint finish and decided to just sit in the bunch to near the end.

No one made any breaks or wanted too work much over the last 10km, so it came down to the last corner and then a straight 200m sprint to the end, with my arm still in pain and the edge taken off me in the chase I tried to sprint but wasn't able give the maximum speed required and finished in bunch in eleventh place, Braedan Dean from Bendigo won with Brae Mapson from Castlemaine second and Jack Hickey Carnegie Caulfield third. Bryce and Christian finished down the order with Tyson and James recording a DNF due to the crash.

After finishing I went the medical staff to be checked out, I had skin off my arms and legs and they advised to get my arm x-rayed at the hospital. We arrived at the Wangaratta hospital a while later and Morgan Curtis from Hawthorn and Tyson were already there after being taken by ambulance, they were checked out and were ok to leave later after some patching up, as they had also left some skin on the road at the crash site.

My placing meant I didn't score any points in the aggregate series this weekend, as double points were awarded for the top 10 places I was overtaken by two riders who finished ten and fifteen points in front of me, this meant I finished sixth which was disappointing as I was third for most of the series, the top five riders got picked for the Victorian Road team to compete at the national championships in Canberra next month.

After resting for the next week my arm was still sore so I had some more scans and x-rays, there were no broken bones detected and they advised to rest it, with a national championship and some important training coming up I don't think so, I will check how my arm and fitness is over the next few weeks as I can still enter as an individual.

Some better news the previous week at the Victorian Club Teams time trial championships near Ballarat, I was teamed with Brunswick riders Bryce, Tyson and James, we had a good race and rode well as a team to be second fastest in our age group and claim the silver medal.

Explain how you got involved with cycle racing

My parents offered to help me start out with a hobby and I chose cycling - my brother chose music. I had a family friend that was into racing and had initially wanted a mountain bike, but he raced road, which was the direction I then took. A mate from school was a member of the Brunswick Club, so I joined and travelled to races with him.

Describe your best racing experience

Winning a race in Belgium. The race was in a town called Ingelmunster, and the win came with a big trophy. Having the yellow at the Bay series this year was a goody too.

Describe your worst racing experience

It would prob be the pain chasing many splits in howling wind and rain whilst overseas. Or maybe crashing heavily at the nationals in '03 and tearing the front end off my bike and taking a good knock to the head.

What is your favourite regular ride?

Kinglake ride is prob the most regular, but any training ride in good weather with friends is great. More so, the bakery stop... That's what makes it.

Most embarrassing dismount?

Top of the Humevale hill on the Kinglake ride. Couldn't pull my foot out and fell straight over.

Who do you look to for inspiration in your cycle racing?

Dylan Newel is the bench mark at the moment. He trains like a nutter and the results always show. Or observing those who act and race in the most professional ways possible. This is always good to take ideas from and improve my own racing.

What are your short and long-term cycling goals?

Herald Sun Tour has always been a goal and one to focus on now. A podium at the nationals TT would be a nice claim, but I think I may need to pedal a touch faster.

What advice would you give to new club riders to help improve their racing?

Get a coach early and listen to them. They know best, and you know nothing at that stage. It is the best possible way to get your cycling career off the ground and heading in the right direction.
