Womens Omnium Report

The Inaugural Victorian Women’s Omnium Championship held on Sunday at Disc saw the largest turnout of women to an event ever (close to 50) in the State and was a massive success as a result.

The event was held by CSV and presented by Brunswick Cycling Club.

This event was also the first race of its kind to be held in the country for women.

Omniums comprise five races; flying 200, 500m time trial, scratch race, points race and pursuit, and as a result, is neither sprint nor endurance specific.

Women competed in classes from J15, J17, J19, Elite and Masters and the standard of racing was very high.

What was particularly exciting was that the women raced strategically and aggressively – as they had to survive all five events.

The commentary provided by Bikesportz Jonathon Nunan was fantastic and his knowledge of the lady riders was also very impressive, as was his interviewing of special guests Anna Meares and the Proman Cycling ladies team.

Anna Meares’ appearance was a highlight for many of the girls, with many enjoying a chat and lining up for autographs and a photo with one of the world’s top track sprinters.

The Americans; Nicola, Shelley and Cari also spent a lot of time with the ladies and will hopefully join the competition next year.

This year the ladies raced for prizes on top of their medals – these included:

  • $100 in Prize Money from Brunswick (Roller Derby) each for J15 and J17 winners
  • Specialized helmets from Avanti
  • Crumpler back packs from Crumpler
  • Chainring vouchers from CycleUnderground
  • Elmore Oil prize packs
  • Aqto socks and caps from Aqto
  • Jimi Wallets from Jimi Wallets
  • And Ezycleat positioning devices from Ergotek

All competitors also received fantastic soothing Elmore Oil roll ons for entering the event.

Massive thanks must go to Brunswick CC for its excellent organisation of the day and to all the volunteers, sponsors and commissaries who made it such a brilliant experience for all.
