Rollers @ The East

Round 10 of the BCC roller derby was held at The East Brunswick Club, in conjunction with the 2008 road season presentations. After the medals were handed out, round one kicked off with a series of 1 lap match races, based on qualifying times.

Following round one, each rider did a 25m slowest time trial. Josh Vicino set the benchmark of 24.5s, the closest rider to that was Jake Sutherland in 23.9s. Interestingly, since almost all riders failed to complete the 25m, Liam (representing couriers world-wide) placed 4th in the round after riding a very fast 3.1s, but managed to make the finals based on that time!

After the slow time trials, riders battled it out again in a one-lap handicap race. There were some very close finises, and a whole lot of burnt rubber as riders pushed themselves and the rollers to the limit.

While the officials furiously skimmed results to determine finalists, Ollie and Jake came forward to request a go at the Chooka Challenge: 4 laps of the dial against the clock. Jake cruised through the 4 laps finishing in just 1:15 – the fastest time we’ve seen yet in this series, however after scrutineering it was determined that his bike was not in compliance with the gear restriction rule. Ollie did his first lap in under 17s, right on program to match Chooka’s 1:02, but with an important race on the next morning he decided to take it easy and finished in 1:21 – only half a second slower than Russell Collins’ time of 1:20.5. Also having a crack at the Chooka challenge was first-time roller Alex four-point-oh of the Melbourne Bike Polo Club, finishing in a time of 1:32.

Immediately following the Chooka Challenges, the finals were run over 2 laps. Brendan rode away from Liam for third place and Damian forced Jake onto an unfamiliar bike in order to clinch 1st place.

"It's On!"

It's On!

There was an official protest from third-placed Brendan Bailey lodged after the 1/2 final – and a challenge to first-placed Damian Hodges: You and me, fixed gears, for 1st and 3rd!. Damoh responded: "It’s on!". So the 1/3 final was run and Brendan Bailey rode easily home to first-place on the podium.
