Evening Enduro #3
16 eager endurance riders turned up for Brunswick’s Evening Enduro round 3. The last round was washed out due to feak rains, but this month all the heavens aligned for a beautiful evening at the outdoor track.
B grade were up first with a 20 lap scratch race. A solid wind kept the group together for most of the race, but a well-timed break on the bell lap by Walter Dapcich clinched the race from Conan Daley and Monique Hanley.
A grade followed with a 25 lap scratch. Hawthorn’s Cam Woolcock lead them out very fast over the first lap before the group settled to a reasonable speed. There were a few attacks by Ewin Williams, but coming into the final lap, all the riders were together and Stuart Vaughan took the win over Cam Woolcock and Sean Hurley.
Next up was the B grade point score. B grade rode 50 laps with sprints every 10 laps. There were some very close sprints in this grade and by half-distance, the main two contenders Mo Hodges and Mo Hanley were swapping points, only one between them.
(Da)Mo launched an attack with about 25 laps to go, but Mo(nique) went with him and after a few laps out front they decided to take cover with the main group. Final places were determined on the final sprint: Monique Hanley got the 5 points but came 2nd overall to Damo by just a single point.
As the sun began to set and the lights warmed up, A grade had their turn with a 70 lap point score. It was a Brunswick vs Hawthorn race from the first sprint, with Stu Vaughan and Cam Woolcock battling Sean Hurley and Ewin Williams. Ewin launched a few breaks but was unable to get away – the wind making it very hard for solo riders to make much progress on the bunch.
In the end Stu Vaughan dominated the final few sprints and cruised home to 1st, 10pts clear of 2nd placed Sean Hurley.
Following the points races, both grades had an elimination and the crowd was kept entertained by Mr. B (a late B grade scatching).
The final event for the evening was the all-in BBQ and huddle around the Kiosk for warmth.
Thanks to all riders, spectators and helpers on the night. Special thanks to Dave (the Pink Wiggle) Morgan, Thomas Dapcich, and Mr B. Bailey for their help running the night and to Omar R. for taking the photos. We’ll be back for more endurance fun on Saturday February 7th. Keep your eye on the website for more info as it arrives.
