Six Days all Rolled into One!!

Well the 2010 Enduro series started the new year with one almighty bang! Race director Nath “the master” Fraser, had formulated a six day format rolled into one night of exciting racing.

Nev awaits

Nev Awaits

The night was split into madison pairs events and others. Each of the Madison teams were split with one rider contesting the individual “sprint” events and the other the  ”enduro” events, the points on offer going towards the overall points tally.

The non madison entrants were treated to graded scratch races an Italian Pursuit and the now customary Paced Elimination and Paced Points races.

The madison teams participated in the Paced Elimination, all who have done the past 3 enduros are showing improved results in this event with them all lasting longer.

With Matt Lees out with a broken collarbone from his front page headline grabbing stack at Shepparton the other week, he was unable to defend his 65 lap 63kph record but kept the crowd on the edge of their seats with his commentary as young Sam “the cannon” Conder was the last man standing at 58kph.

It was a night of International excitement, with the boys from Italo down for a bit of biffo and accents flying thick and fast, Irish, Scottish, Dutch, French, Italian, the next enduro should be come as your favourite salad dressing!!!

The enduro side of the madison teams were up first with a heart starting Scratch race, with team bro (New Zealand), Fraser Short & Greg Brunt heading the leader board from team Kaiser (Germany) Andy Burmas & Eddie Barrett, team Boonen (Belgium) Adam Gibson & Sam Conder and team bos (the Netherlands), Nico Drent & Philthy Phil Bushell.

Next was the Kerin and with the inaugural Enduro Madison Title up for grabs it was a no holds barred affair with a HUGE wheelie from the Flying Conder (or should that be CONDOR) taking the points.

So After round 2 it was Team Bro 8pts, Team Boonen 7, The kaiser 5, and the Bos on 2.

While the teams went below to their digs for their soigneurs to massage their weary legs the support races were on with an Italian Pursuit, Chris Hickey showing his speed and endurance over the final lap to secure the win for the “Back Straight Boys” whose CD is out next week!

The teams were back on the track while the Pilsner and Lager charged crowd was really getting into the swing of things, this time it was the Madison flying lap, each team had to record a time for a flying lap and execute a change somewhere in that lap.

Team Bro

Team Bro give it their all

It was interesting to see where some teams effected the change, obviously they do it differently in some countries, team bos narrowly avoiding disaster with a missed change, the crowd still wondering how filthy phil didn’t end up in the Merri creek such was the speed!

Team Boonen 12pts, Hey Bro 9, The Kaiser 8, the Bos 4.

The support 60 lap paced Points was on next with some spirited sprinting on show, the corporate boxes were packed to capacity and offers of sprint priem prizes were freely offered as the steins were drained by the thirsty fans.

Conrad perry was the only survivor of those who gained the lap to stay till the end with a hard earned 44pts from Romain 7, Nick 3 and the Enduro’s #1 female star Jessica on 2.

The Grande Finale was the Madison, there was a “nervous tension” blanketing the track as the teams took the main stage, a quiet word from Chief Commissaire Dave “i’ll chop you out” Morgan and it was on!

After the first 3 sprints it was still anyones race then team Boonen made the race winning break holding their purseurs at bay to record an emphatic victory!

Team Boonen Salute the Fans

The final overall standings were,

Team Boonen 30pts, Team Bro 21, The kaiser 16 and Team Bos 10 (all on the same lap).

Congratulations to the teams, the staff, the crowd, it was a great night.

Special mention to Helen & Kimberly Morgan, Brendan (almost peoples choice) Bailey Mark & Faith Holloway for the BBQ and the bruised and battered Nath Fraser.

Feb’s Enduro will be HUGE…stay tuned for details.
