March Madness Enduro Rewrites the Record Book
No doubt about it folks, the Brunswick Enduros are rewriting the record books each time they are held.
The brain child of our one and only Nathan Fraser, this months epic started around 1pm with Dave Morgan and Benedict Hughes constructing some racks to hang your bikes on around the grounds.
The new grandstand that was unveiled last week saw it filled to capacity as the dash to trim the duck board edge got underway at 3pm.
The car park was 90% full as the 1hr motor pace warm up got underway and at 6.30 the now traditional “Heart Starter” Scratch races commenced.
There’s none of this namby pamby, hit and giggle racing like you get at these “minority” indoor events..It’s hard core Track Enduro Porn.
C grade do 20 laps yes, it isn’t a typo, 20 x 320m = 6.4km
When was the last time you saw C grade do 26 laps at disc?
The advisory notice went up earlier in the week, 86 was the recommended gear and those who took heed lasted the night.
B grades 30 laps was an attacking affair while the aces took a cautionary approach to their 40 laps, obviously saving a bit for the madison that was later in the program.
Next Up was the Nick Lett inspired Paced Teams Pursuit. 15 laps (4.7k)
4 man teams start of the fence and get on their pacer at 35kph for the first 5 laps, so at 10 laps remaining they can call for the speed to go up or down as they try to keep their opponents at bay.
Some close finishes saw the team of Matt Ladner, Benedict Hughes, Sam Mc Gregor and Chris Pescott take the win in a time of 6.41.44. the final lap being their fastest at a shade over 53kph.
The “Last man standing” Paced Elimination was next and saw everyone setting new personal best marks.
The pacer starts off at 35kph and at the completion of 5 laps the speed is increased by 3k’s, the aim is to see how long you can stay in the conga line. This month saw young Jay Callaghan hold on for the 60 laps at a terminal speed of 63.1kph. Jay was looking for more as he was comfortable tapping the 90″ over, however the madison was calling.
100 laps 7 teams and it was on from the starters gun, Hamish Taylor was there to continue his preparation for his campaign in Italy in May with Sam McGregor, the italo boys Nick & Fraser were there as always, Ollie & Sean “the man” hurley were looking sharp, Greg and Andy (no relation to Hamish and Andy) were flying the Brunswick strip, Matt Ladner & Chris Pescott were looking surfer smooth in the Torquay Cycling Factory gear and Jay & Damo were in the Stealth colours.
It appeared that Ollie & sean had a plan, Ollie throws sean in, sean goes at it 200%, sean throws ollie in, ollie goes ballistic and so on.
The plan worked well and withstood the barrage of counter attacks from the other teams. In the end it was Ollie & Sean from sam & hamish, Jay & Damo, Greg & Andy, Phil & Alex James whos back from Japan and Nick & Fraser.
Final event on the card was the Paced Points. 60 laps, sprints every 10 and with most of the Madison pairings still recovering it was only the hardened enduro pros that stayed on for it. Sam McGregor, Matt Ladner, Greg Brunt and Very fast Chris as he has become known stayed on after the madison to “cool down”
Chris Sam and Matt went for a lap early and got it, then Chris and sam went for another, only this time Chris was the only one who managed to claim it. As the final sprint crossed the line Jess wasn’t finished wanting to set a new distance PB for herself and Neville the wonder bike was happy to oblige, even upping the pace over the final laps to give jess an extra 10.
The weather was awesome, the racing fast and courteous with the experianced hands helping the newcomers accross all the events.
Congratulations to our visitors Hannah who came all the way from Albury as well as damo, jay hamish & co.
To the regulars like our friends from Italo dermot, damien & fraser our Brunswick faithful James & Issac Sam, Phil, Greg, Romain, Jess and the list goes on.
Our never say die volunteers, Helen, dave, lisa, benedict & co.
Thanks for coming and see you in April.!!!!
Here’s some stats from the night…
Neville did 2hrs 26mins 44 secs at an average of 39.5kph and a max of 63.1 and a total of 96.72km.
Cam did 2 hot dogs, 1 muesli bar, 6 cups of coffee, 2 of blakeys awesome sausage rolls, and by the time he did the shopping on the way home he crawled into bed at 2am…missed the wake up call at 5.30 so didn’t make it to Bacchus Marsh where Jack successfully completed the 2nd of 3 qualifying events for the state championships, forgot to bring in the and hang out the washing and stumbled round for the rest of the afternoon.
see you in April..onya cam
