Brunswick Juniors – State Team Bound

Tri . tri, trii……iathlon. Say this to a cyclist and they will think you’ve caught a new sort of cold. Ask them and most cyclists they will tell you that you should only swim when you fall into the water and that you should only run if being chased by a large dog. You should never, ever try to swim before riding a bike and under no circumstances should you ever consider running after riding your bike; you should hang about talking about what gear you’re riding beforehand and then sip coffee and work out tomorrow’s recovery ride afterwards.

Well, clearly two Brunswick Juniors didn’t get the memo. Whilst the other Juniors’ have been chasing fortune and glory on the Christmas Carnival Circuit or at one of the many summer Crits (or maybe just enjoying eight weeks off school and sleeping in), Emily Dunk (JW15) and Lachlan Brown (JM17) have spent their summer swimming, running and, of course, riding, their way into Team Vic, the State Junior Triathlon Team.

Early starts for training rides are normal for a cyclist, but add in 5am starts for swimming and races that start at 7 in the morning, then these two future stars have certainly have had their fill this summer. Then again, they also get to race the time trial on completely closed roads and what cyclist wouldn’t like that!

For Lockie, a 2nd year JM17 (in cycling speak) this is his fourth time as a member of Team Vic, competing this year as a top age Intermediate on the demanding Busselton triathlon course in April this year. Emily, a 2nd year JW15, is off for the second time in the team; she will be racing in the Junior Female division as a top age athlete.

Not satisfied with the State Triathlon Team, Em has backed up on the Track, having been one of the only girls to race all 5 National Junior Track Series races (four of them for the enemy), some of the Christmas Carnivals and most recently taking Silver in the State 2000M IP and Bronze in the State Scratch Race, earning herself a spot in the 2012 State Junior Track Team as one of the 5 Brunswick J15s. In doing so she is one of the only athletes to ever achieve both State Junior Triathlon and Track team, and most certainly the only girl to do it in the same year. After being airlifted from the State Crit last year and spending four months off her bike it’s been a huge achievement for her.
