Cycling lost a true gentleman yesterday in a tragic training accident.
Doug Garley was a true racer, starting his amateur career with Blackburn in the late sixties, he turned “Pro” in the early eighties and headed to Europe to chase his dreams.
He continued his professional career when he returned home, sharing all he learned from the European scene to everyone in the bunch.
Three Cycling Clubs have been blessed to have had Doug as a member, Blackburn, Carnegie – Caulfield and Ballarat.
Each have enjoyed the benefit of having a passionate competitor, organiser and mentor.
Dougs love of the sport saw him mentor countless Juniors and his love of the Madison would see him partner them at every opportunity.
Brunswick member Ewin Williams being fortunate enough to have partnered Doug on occasion.
Blackburns’ Australia Day Madison, Carnegies’ 50km Points Title and the Ballarat Madison won’t be the same without the name D. Garley in the program.
Our thoughts are with his family.
