After a ripper of a morning at Kyneton, me and Tyson soaked up the suns rays as we headed to Harrison St to set up for the Enduro. On the way we stopped by Pat Drapac’s house to pick up a huge box of kit.

After the Tour of Geelong, Pat decided to clean his room and discovered that he still had a heap of stuff that was near new and he had grown out of.

There are going to be some very excited kids at the clinic this season I can assure you!

On behalf of the club I’d like to pass on a big thank to Pat for thinking of us and his generosity.

We arrived at the track only to discover that Dave had the BBQ set up already!

The dark cloud that left us this morning had returned and this time it opened up and dumped a steady stream of rain drops.

Before we knew it there was a clatter a bang and flash of magna as Dave had the pie warmer and rollers set up ready for an Enduro Roller Derby!

In the words of the great Gomez Addams “Capital idea”

As the sun began to set the guests began to arrive, the guests of honour, Sheryl and Josh were draped in their Royal garb bestowed upon them from their regal abode back in the UK.

In fact, Josh was proudly showing off his clubs new kit as he warmed up on the retro fitted Farleigh. I say “retro” because back in the days of World of Sport. the handlebars were turned “up” and believe me it does make the bike more stable.

The BBQ was under way with our President Big Al assuring all and sundry that he wouldn’t “overcook” any of the snags this time! (he was true to his word folks)

The enticing aroma of the party pies filled the clubrooms and the program was announced for the evening.

2 lap qualifiers, then seeded 4 lap heats and a secrect distance final… OUCH!!

The qualifying results were

Matt 48.90. Slatts 49.21. Tyson 51.76. Cam 52.80. Josh 53.40. Jess 60.71.

So the heats were set with the fastest times through to the final…the times were “tabled” and the plate revealed that it would Josh v Cam in the secret distance final.

It was from a standing start affair with both riders having to get going and clip in unassisted, at the completion of the first lap it was evident that some shadow boxing was being conducted and throughout the second lap each rider “tested” the other with attack and counter attack.

Entering lap 3 and the strain was beginning to show, the attacks continued and by the midway point of lap four their pain was easy to gauge by the expressions on their faces.

It seemed like an eternity had passed by the time the bell finally signalled the final lap, with 200m remaining Josh delivered the killer blow raising his cadence to the point where it nearly raised the roof off the clubrooms!

Speaking of OUCH there was also a three rider “Le Mans” team sprint, the riders bikes were up one end of the clubrooms, the riders were…you guessed it, down the other where the rollers were.

At the starters signal the rider would “run” (in their bike shoes) get their bike, run back get on the rollers and sprint for 2 laps, when they crossed the finish their team mate would set off to get their bike while the other slowed and attempted to dismount without collapsing in a heap and so on.

Though the yellow team of Cam, Jess and Slatts held a slender lead for the majority of the distance, the red team of Josh, Tyson and Matt had the legs in the final half lap.

Red 3.20.1 to Yellow 3.21.6

There was also the official presentation of the previous Enduro’s Track Teams Cups to Sean “lone wolf” Hurley.

With the sausages gone and only a handfull of party pies remaining, we called it a night and bid farewell to Sheryl and Josh.

Thanks to Helen , Amanda and Co for organising the all you can eat buffet, Phil for wearing the hat and Nathan for the events. It doesn’t matter if it rains at Harrison St, we have our own indoor!!!

September is my birthday, so naturally the theme for the next enduro will be??? Happy Birthday!!

On Sunday 27th June, prepare to get really really dirty at the Harrison St Velodrome as we revive an old, but not forgotten tradition of the Brunswick Cycling Club: Cyclocross racing. This race will be held in and around the club’s home track in conjunction with Brendan "Handsome" Bailey and NikCee of "Dity Deeds CX" and is part of a three race series.

In the “Cross” class we will require the use of a cyclocross bike, ie: drop bars, 700c rims, no disk brakes (calipers will be allowed for those that don’t have cantis). In the “Open” class there is no restriction on bicycle type.

I was wondering why I hadn’t seen young Stuart Grimsey around the traps lately… He’s in Lyon, France!!!

Stuart is some one I would describe as a quiet achiever, there isn’t any fuss, no strutting around or shouting, he simply lets his front wheel do the talking.

2008 was a good year, the 110th running of the Austral Wheelrace saw no less than five Brunswick riders make the final and what a final it was, with Stuart holding off another Brunswick young gun Casey Munro for 3rd. (OMG that’s right, they ride track as well)

Trivia Question….who is the other long time Brunswick member who has placed in an Austral??

Three Brunswick lads who raced on that evening in 2008 are currently enjoying the thrill of racing around Europe and the UK, Stuart (Vulco Vaulex en Velin), Casey Munro (Pendragon Sports/Colnago) and Mitch Docker (Skill Shimano)

I’ve set them all a challenge… In 25 words (or there abouts) give us an insight on what they are doing in 2010.

Well, first to reply was Stuey and here is his adventure so far…onya

G’day Cam!

For those that didn’t know, for the 2010 season I will be living and racing in and around Lyon, France with Division One team, Team Vulco Vaulx en Velin, which has produced many current professionals such as Christophe Moreau, Sylvain Calzati, Cyril Dessel, Samuel Dumoulin and Remi Cusin. The team has 16 riders with the majority made up of Under 23 riders with our team captain being Christophe Laurent, who has come back to the amateurs after racing for 8 years as a professional for big teams like Credit Agricole, Garmin and Agritubel and having ridden the biggest bike races in the world like the Tour de France and Paris – Roubaix.

I arrived in France at the end of January, when it was still a chilly -7, and will be heading back home by mid October. During my 9 months here in France the team will be competing in numerous UCI 2.2/ 1.2 races, the Coupe de France series (which I am told by Christophe is just as hard and if not harder than professional racing!) and big Under 23 races like Paris – Tours at the end of the season. So far has been great and the racing here is a big step up from that of Australia.

My best result so far was a 6th place in a stage race where I managed to beat an Ag2r espoir rider in the sprint. I am enjoying the challenges that have been thrown at me so far, such as illness, climate, culture and language and I am looking forward to the next half of the season!

Team Vulco Vaulex en Velin is home for Brunswick’s Stuart Grimsey for 2010

Trivia Answer: Ewin Williams
