Arrivederci Italia

B. O'Donnell, Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Ciao!

I had a short break after worlds, and now I’m training for the last race of the European season, the Chrono des Nations, a time trial in les Herbiers, France. This town and the surrounding region has had le Tour de France pass through many times over the years, and they’re cycling mad, so the race has thousands of spectators and a great atmosphere. They even use the start ramp from the TT at TdF, and I’m sure more than a few locals get up on it in the wee hours of the morning to imagine they’re Fabian or Cadel (but not Schumacher!)

A bad dress rehearsal means a good opening night

B. O'Donnell, Monday, September 8th, 2008

Ciao, buongiorno!

When I played Widow Corney, the mean, fat owner of the orphanage in our year 11 production of ‘Oliver! The Musical,’ it was a small but pivotal role. I was the one Mr Bumble confided in when he devised his plan to sell Oliver for a schilling. Dressed in my fat suit and waddling about on the stage, I really felt like a late 19th century mean, fat owner of an orphanage (more…)

The Curtain Raiser - Memorial Davide Fardelli

B. O'Donnell, Saturday, September 6th, 2008

This Sunday, Wazza McDonald (National women’s coach), Vicki Whitelaw (teammate and TT stage winner of the Giro Donne) and I will travel to Rogno, outside Bergamo to race the Cronometro Individuale.

It’s 3 x laps of a 7.6km circuit through the streets to commemorate the life of an Italian cyclist killed in 2004. I don’t know why TTs are often named in memory of the dead, and it would be bad karma to make a joke here, so let’s just say Vail, Davide. It will be my first Italian TT, and an excellent form check before Worlds in 19 days (more…)

Postcard from Italy

B. O'Donnell, Thursday, August 28th, 2008

I arrived safely in Varese, the bikes arrived safely 24h later and there was only one incident of near-arrest at the airport Caribineri. I am proud to say that I would never have squealed.Weather is perfect every day: fine, light breezes and 25-29deg. Most of the road for the TT course has been re-surfaced, and the parts still waiting are like the volcanic edges of Mt Etna. Drivers fly past in feigned attempts of disrespect, but we all know that killing a cyclist in Varese before the World Championships would be worse than voting for Berlusconi.

The local Brett Whitely has been commissioned to put cycling art all about, so here's the first installment.

Kowalski Tour

Admin, Thursday, July 10th, 2008

The Landlink team (women over 30 with some employment only need apply) travelled up to the capital on Thursday to race 4 stages over 3 days as part of the Kowaslki Women’s and Junior Tour. There were little tackers of 10 on restricted gears, up to U19 gals (on their way to South Africa for the Junior World Champs) and senior women, racing over the roads near Mt Stromlo, Uriarra and Coppins Crossing. And just in case you didn’t get to see enough of the same roads, we pretty much just cut laps of those surrounds all weekend. There were supposedly complete road closures though, which supposedly made it safer (more…)
